Make Queens Safer’s Safer Greener Streets Fair was held on September 13, 2014 at Staunton Field and the 78th Street Play Street in Jackson Heights, Queens
The program was anchored by one of New York City’s popular Bike Bonanzas, which featured:
- A bike helmet giveaway, courtesy of NYCDOT, which fitted and gave away 723 helmets to adults and children
- A kids’ bike swap, organized by Recycle-A-Bicycle, and
- Learn to ride lessons, led by Bike New York with help from Citibike and others
In addition, the fair included:
- Free bike repair, courtesy of Bike Yard
- A Bicycle Rodeo to teach beginning cyclists basic safety skills for biking in traffic, organized by Elmhurst Hospital Center and assisted by Young Governors and other partners
- A Kid Engineers Traffic Study to document traffic safety risks in the neighborhood, with the Transportation Alternatives Queens Committee, P.S. 280 staff, and Councilmember Danny Dromm. We’ve posted the findings of this study here.
- A Mini-Film Festival about street safety and street transformation initiatives in Queens and around the world, featuring Streetfilms
- Opportunities to learn about community groups involved in making our streets safer, greener and more livable, including the Jackson Heights Beautification Group, the Girl Scouts of Greater New York, Transportation Alternatives’ NYC Bike Ambassadors, New York Coalition for Transportation Safety and others
