{"id":1059,"date":"2015-06-08T22:56:49","date_gmt":"2015-06-09T02:56:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/makequeenssafer.org\/home\/?p=1059"},"modified":"2015-06-09T14:12:22","modified_gmt":"2015-06-09T18:12:22","slug":"mqs-endorses-the-moveny-fair-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/makequeenssafer.org\/home\/2015\/06\/mqs-endorses-the-moveny-fair-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"MQS Endorses the Move NY Fair Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Make Queens Safer believes that a robust, well-maintained public transit system promotes walking and biking and makes our city streets safer for everyone.\u00a0 To that end, we support full funding for the MTA capital program.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1063 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/makequeenssafer.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/MoveNY2.jpg\" alt=\"MoveNY2\" width=\"364\" height=\"140\" srcset=\"https:\/\/makequeenssafer.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/MoveNY2.jpg 442w, https:\/\/makequeenssafer.org\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/MoveNY2-300x115.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In particular, Make Queens Safer endorses the <a href=\"http:\/\/iheartmoveny.org\/\">Move NY Fair Plan<\/a>\u00a0because of its additional potential to reduce dangerous through traffic on neighborhood arterials in Western Queens.\u00a0 Currently, many drivers go out of their way to use\u00a0Northern Boulevard, Roosevelt Avenue, and Queens Boulevard\u00a0to reach the free Queensboro Bridge, in order to avoid tolls on the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and the RFK Bridge.\u00a0 Under the Move NY Fair Plan, the incentive to do this will be eliminated, helping improve conditions on these dangerous streets.<\/p>\n<p>If tolls are implemented on the East River Bridges, we urge policymakers to give special attention to the needs of senior citizens and others who currently rely on a free Queensboro Bridge to reach\u00a0medical\u00a0appointments in Manhattan.\u00a0 The City of New York stands to save perhaps ten millions of dollars each year from avoided bridge maintenance costs under this plan (more when major rehabilitation projects are required).\u00a0 We believe it should be feasible and inexpensive to develop a program under which tolls for\u00a0emergencies or\u00a0medical\u00a0visits by qualifying participants can be reimbursed from these savings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/movenewyork.wordpress.com\/2015\/06\/09\/make-queens-safer-sees-benefits-of-move-ny-to-peds-cyclists\/\">Move NY has more on our endorsement<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Make Queens Safer believes that a robust, well-maintained public transit system promotes walking and biking and makes our city streets safer for everyone.\u00a0 To that end, we support full funding for the MTA capital program.
